Video: Top-Five Runner Kyle Larson SMASHES Turn Six Barrier at Chicago

Kyle Larson, one of the favorites to possibly take down Shane Van Gisbergen for the victory in Sunday’s Grant Park 165 at the Chicago Street Course, is now out of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series event, after slamming the tire barriers in the low-speed corner of Turn 6.

The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion was running in third place at the time of the incident, when his No. 5 Valvoline Chevrolet slid far into the braking zone, and on the slick racetrack, pounded the tire barriers.

Larson crunched up the front end of the Hendrick Motorsports vehicle, to the point where it required a retirement on the part of the No. 5 team, relegating him to 39th. The Elk Grove, California native was poised to take advantage of Shane Van Gisbergen being out of the race, after being tagged by Chase Briscoe.

Entering Chicago, Larson leads the regular-season points over teammate Chase Elliott, a gap that will surely be dwindled following Sunday’s event.
