Stenhouse, Roush-Fenway Racing Honoring Darrell Waltrip With Special Sonoma Paint Scheme

This week’s race at Sonoma Raceway will mark the final time that Darrell Waltrip calls a race from the booth for FOX Sports ending an illustrious 19-year career as an analyst. Waltrip will undoubtedly receive a lot of tributes this weekend, but none will be as amazing as the paint scheme that Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will be running this weekend.

As the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series haulers pull into the track, the No. 17 team will unload a very familiar looking car. Stenhouse’s Fastenal Ford Mustang will sport the iconic Western Auto paint scheme that Waltrip used in the 1990s, it even — for now — includes the chrome No. 17’s on the side of the car.

Waltrip utilized this exact paint scheme on his No. 17 car from 1991 to 1995. He used a similar scheme for 1996 and 1997, but the white to black gradient down the sides of the car was turned white to dark blue for those couple of seasons.

This is an amazing tribute to a man who has given so much of his life to the sport of NASCAR.

Here was the paint scheme on Waltrip’s No. 17 Chevrolet Lumina at Pocono back in 1991:
