On Saturday, the NASCAR Cup Series drivers put on a frantic show on the newly reconfigured 1.54-mile Atlanta Motor Speedway, as they attempted to learn the new track and the superspeedway-style racing it provides.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. turned the fastest lap in the session, which was a 29.780 sec. lap time. Kyle Busch was just 0.036 sec. behind Stenhouse in second. Christopher Bell, Harrison Burton and Joey Logano were the remainder of the top-five in the practice.

In all, the top-33 cars in the practice were within a half second of each other on the speed chart.

Following the session, Christopher Bell called the drafting at Atlanta Motor Speedway, “Full blown chaos,” and Bell seemed shook by the fact that there will be 500-miles of it on Sunday.

Bell, Stenhouse and others also agree that pitting from the pack in the race is going to be very difficult, as there is not real runoff area to reduce your speed in, like there is at Daytona and Talladega.

Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta is shaping up to be an unpredictable event, and it very well could be one that remains on race fan’s minds for years to come.
