According to a September 6 report from Jordan Bianchi of ‘The Athletic’, NASCAR is close to finalizing a deal which will see its traditional pre-season race – now known as “The Clash” — moved from the grounds of Daytona International Speedway for the first-time ever and into a more desirable market, Los Angeles.

Bianchi reports that NASCAR has been in serious talks to move “The Clash” from Daytona International Speedway – held on the oval until 2021, when it was held on the road course — to a purpose-built short track inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, a venue that has played host to a pair of Super Bowls (I and VII), as well as the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics, with the facility set to host the 2028 Summer Games.

The event would likely take place two weeks prior to the Daytona 500, which is scheduled for February 20, and would be used as a pre-cursor for the highly-anticipated 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season, which will see NASCAR’s top-level debut a new generation of car that has been in the works for many years.

It’s unclear which car will be used for the pre-season event, with teams expressing concerns about having to race a brand-new car in an event that will not award points, and at that, will be a full-contact race because of the tight confines of the track the series will be racing on for the first-time ever.
