Race Preview

Denny Hamlin starts on the pole in Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 at Atlanta, and you would expect after four top-five finishes through the opening five races of the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season, that he’s be a favorite, right? Well, Hamlin has just one win at Atlanta, which came when the race surface was nine years newer than it will be in Sunday’s race.

Overall, Hamlin has just two top-five finishes in his last six starts at AMS. So, the speedway has been very hit or miss for Hamlin, but if his No. 11 Toyota unloads quick, he could sail to his first win of 2021.

Martin Truex Jr., his teammate, will start second and he is coming off of his first win of 2021 and Atlanta is a 1.5-mile track which is his specialty. Unfortunately for Truex, Atlanta is one of two 1.5-mile speedways (Texas being the other) that he has never won at in his Cup Series career. However, Truex did get a good primer on what Sunday’s race could be like as he finished runner-up in Saturday’s Xfinity Series event.

Truex very well could take his second win in a row, if everything falls right for him.

However, one of the true favorites for the win has to be Brad Keselowski who starts fourth.

Keselowski has two wins at this race track, including two of the last four races there. Keselowski has not finished outside the top-10 in a race at Atlanta since the 2014 season. Keselowski has also been very strong to start the 2021 season and appears to be on the verge of victory.

He would figure to be a solid choice to take the win on Sunday.
