When Kurt Busch made the decision to move to Chip Ganassi Racing’s No. 1 team for 2019, many speculated that it would be a one-year retirement tour for the 40-year-old driver. However, Busch has flipped the narrative by performing incredibly well in his first nine races with his new team.

Now, people are talking about contract extensions. Well, people except for those actually involved in the deal according to a report from Sports Business Journal’s Adam Stern. In the report CGR’s Doug Duchardt explains that the only talks that members from the organization and Busch have had since he joined are related to the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals.

Does this mean Busch will be one and done with CGR after the 2019 season? Of course not. It just simply means that talks have yet to begin on a potential contract extension.

Through nine starts, Busch has six top-10 finishes this season and sits seventh in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series point standings. Meanwhile, Busch’s CGR teammate Kyle Larson has just two top-10 finishes and sits a disappointing 19th in the championship standings. Busch has certainly carried the banner for the team through the 1/4th mark of the season.
