With a stay-at-home order already in place in the state of Virginia due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it appeared that the NASCAR race weekend on May 9th was in doubt. Friday, NASCAR officially postponed the event.

In a statement, NASCAR said, “NASCAR is postponing the scheduled events on May 8-9 at Martinsville Speedway. Our intention remains to run all 36 races, with a potential return to racing without fans in attendance in May at a date and location to be determined. The health and safety of our competitors, employees, fans and the communities in which we run continues to be our top priority. We will continue to consult with health experts and local, state and federal officials as we assess future scheduling options.”

As has been said all along, NASCAR still fully intends to contest all 36 NASCAR Cup Series events this season, and the statement announces that the sanctioning body is potentially eyeing a return sometime in May without fans in the stands.

As this story continues to develop, we will bring you the latest.

  1. It’s not like we haven’t been expecting this announcement. Thank you, Toby. I sincerely hope you and your wife and children are doing well in these sad times…..I’ve been kind of watching the iracing, but sometimes I forget it’s on. Considered running a small pool on the races, but complete line ups and complete results were hard to find at first, so I gave up. You are all in my prayers. Karen
