NASCAR has had some promising television ratings numbers to start the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season, but unless you see how other sports compare to the viewership that NASCAR receives on the same day, it can sometimes just feel like a bunch of overwhelming numbers.

On Wednesday, Adam Stern of Sports Business Journal, Tweeted the final viewership numbers from Sunday’s race at Auto Club Speedway. The NASCAR race registered 4.8-million viewers. That sounds like a lot.

Turns out, it is.

The NASCAR race on Sunday defeated the Los Angeles Lakers / New Orleans Pelicans NBA game, which was broadcast on ESPN, for the top viewed sporting event on Sunday.

The NBA game, which featured LeBron James versus Zion Williamson, recorded 2.7-million viewers.

The 4.8-million viewers also marked an impressive 14-percent increase over the Auto Club Speedway race from a season ago. However, the race did have a six-percent decrease in viewership over 2019’s third Cup Series race of the year, which was held at Las Vegas.

Sunday’s race scored a 2.9 rating, according to Showbuzzdaily.com

NASCAR will look to continue their impressive start to the television ratings they’ve enjoyed through the first three races of the season. Sunday’s race will be at Phoenix Raceway at 3:30 PM ET on FOX and the race is also able to be streamed via the Fox Sports Go app.

  1. Was there a rating for the race? Or were just numbers given? I’m keeping track on my phone and I was doing the rating and the amount of viewers.
