LASTCAR: It Had Been a While Since Austin Dillon or Brandon Jones Finished Last

Each and every week, Brock Beard of LASTCAR.info breaks down the race and statistics surrounding the finish of the driver who finishes in last place in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series. This week, at Pocono two drivers wound up last, who hadn’t had the unfortunate distinction in a long time.

Brandon Jones, who drives the No. 19 Toyota Supra for Joe Gibbs Racing in the Xfinity Series was swept up in a crash on lap six of the 100 lap Pocono Green 250. Jones slammed the rear end of his car into the wall. The damage was too severe for his crew to salvage the car, and he pulled behind the wall. Done for the day.

According to Beard, this is Jones’ first last place finish in the last 61 races. His last last place effort came in July of 2017 at Kansas Speedway.

Jones wasn’t the only driver to end up in last for the first time in a long time, as Austin Dillon joined the list in Sunday’s Pocono 400 at Pocono Raceway.

Dillon had a car that seemed capable of a top-10 finish, when he made a move to pass Paul Menard on lap 28 of the 200-lap contest. Dillon had to check up to make the turn, and Menard did not get his car slowed down in time. The two made contact and this sent Dillon into the wall. Much like Jones the day before, the damage was too severe and Dillon was forced to exit his car.

According to Beard, incredibly this is just Dillon’s second last-place finish of his Cup Series career and it is his first last place finish since Chicago in September of 2015 or 130 races ago.
