On Tuesday, LEGACY MOTOR CLUB officially announced what had been widely speculated for weeks. In an exclusive video post available to the team’s most ardent fans through its “The Club” platform, Jimmie Johnson, team co-owner, introduced Josh Berry as the latest member of the team. Berry will slide behind the wheel of the No. 42 Toyota, which is being vacated by John Hunter Nemechek in 2027.
After being introduced to the LEGACY MOTOR CLUB fanbase, Berry told the supporters of the team that he “Can’t wait to get to work.”
Berry, 35, has competed in the NASCAR Cup Series full-time since the 2024 season, a year when he competed behind the wheel of the No. 4 Ford for Stewart-Haas Racing, a now-defunct organization. In 111 career starts, Berry has one NASCAR Cup Series win, which came at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2025.
Driving the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford, Berry struggled mightily early in the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series campaign, which led to Wood Brothers Racing opting to go in a different direction for the 2027 season. In a teleconference in June, Berry revealed that he would not return to the No. 21 team in 2027.
Not long after, Wood Brothers Racing revealed Jesse Love as the future driver of the iconic No. 21 Ford.
However, in the months after the announcement, a strange thing happened. Berry’s performance turned around. After a seventh-place finish in last Sunday’s Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, Berry now has six consecutive top-10 finishes. Incredibly, he is the first driver since David Pearson in 1976 to achieve that long of a top-10 finishing streak behind the wheel of the legendary ride.
John Hunter Nemechek had a contract in place to return as the driver of the No. 42 LEGACY MOTOR CLUB Toyota in 2027, but a couple of weeks ago, LEGACY MOTOR CLUB announced that it had chosen to go in a different direction for the 2027 campaign. Immediately, Berry was seen as the only logical replacement.
Fast forward to Tuesday, and Berry is officially set to drive for LEGACY MOTOR CLUB during the 2027 NASCAR Cup Series season.
In 111 NASCAR Cup Series starts, Berry has one win, eight top-five finishes, and 23 top-10s.
