Jeb Burton will compete in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race at Phoenix Raceway, the driver announced on Tuesday.

The Halifax, Virginia native will make his first-ever start in the NextGen car in Sunday’s 312-lap event, joining forces with Team AmeriVet to pilot the No. 50 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

Burton and Team AmeriVet were added to NASCAR’s Preliminary Entry List on Tuesday, with an official announcement coming from the organization later in the afternoon.

Mike Hillman, Jr. will work with the organization this weekend at Phoenix Raceway, marking the first time he’s served as the crew chief of a NASCAR Cup Series entry since 2014, when he partnered with Circle-Sport and Joe Falk.

Hillman and Burton have worked together in the past, spending the 2012 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series campaign paired up on the No. 4 Chevrolet Silverado for Turner-Scott Motorsports, where they scored one victory and finished fifth in points.

Burton is the son of 2002 Daytona 500 winner Ward Burton, the nephew of multi-time NASCAR Cup Series winner and NBC Sports analyst Jeff Burton, and the cousin of current NASCAR Cup Series driver Harrison Burton.

Throughout his career, the 32-year-old driver has made a total of 33 starts in the NASCAR Cup Series, none of which have been more recent than a two-race deal for Rick Ware Racing in 2019.

The majority of his starts at NASCAR’s top level were contested during the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series campaign, where Burton signed on to compete full-time with BK Racing, splitting his time between the No. 23 and No. 26.

Burton has spent the last four seasons competing full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, driving for a variety of organizations, including Kaulig Racing, Our Motorsports, and Jordan Anderson Racing.

During that time, Burton, who when provided the opportunity carries the No. 27 on his entries, collected a pair of Xfinity Series victories, both at Talladega Superspeedway.

Heading into the season-finale at Phoenix Raceway, Burton sits 19th in Xfinity Series point standings for Jordan Anderson Racing.
