Chase Elliott, Kevin Harvick, Three Others Lose Crew Member and Pit Selection For Multiple Failed Inspections at Vegas

On Friday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the NASCAR Cup Series teams went through the technical inspection bay to prepare for qualifying on Saturday at the 1.5-mile speedway. However, five teams ran into issues in inspection.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s No. 4 team (car driven by Kevin Harvick), Hendrick Motorsports’ No. 9 team (car driven by Chase Elliott), Wood Brothers Racing’s No. 21 team (car driven by Harrison Burton), Front Row Motorsports’ No. 38 team (driven by Todd Gilliland) and Spire Motorsports’ No. 77 team (driven by Josh Bilicki) all failed pre-qualifying inspection twice.

As a result, all five teams had a crew member ejected from the weekend’s activities at the race track, and all five teams will lose their pit selection this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Here are the team members who were sent home following the inspection issues:

  • No. 4: Car Chief, Robert “Cheddar” Smith
  • No 9: Car Chief, Matt Barndt
  • No. 21: Car Chief, Cody Sauls
  • No. 38: Car Chief, Tony Manzer
  • No. 77: Engineer, Nicholas Sowa

It is NASCAR’s discretion as to which crew member is ejected, and it usually pertains to what section of the car failed inspection.

NASCAR Cup Series qualifying for Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 is set for 2 PM ET on Saturday. Qualifying will be broadcast on FS1 on Saturday.
