Cole Custer Steals the Win at Kentucky After Frenzied Green-White-Checkered Finish

Wow. That is all that can be said after NASCAR Cup Series rookie Cole Custer stunned everyone by capturing his first-career victory in the series after a wild and frantic green-white-checkered finish in the Quaker State 400.

Custer said after climbing from the car, that his No. 41 machine was the best race car he’s ever driven.

“Man, we were so good all day our car was so good,” Custer said emotionally. “Obviously, it wasn’t the easiest track to pass on so we were stuck back there, but that was the best car I’ve ever driven in my life.”

Custer became the first NASCAR Cup Series rookie to win a race since Chris Buescher took a fog-shortened win at Pocono Raceway in 2016 and by scoring the win, Custer is now locked into the NASCAR All-Star Race on Wednesday at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The Stewart-Haas Racing driver restarted from sixth, but got an amazing push from Matt DiBenedetto on the restart, which gave him a fighting chance at the win.

After Custer got to fourth, he squeezed by a hard-battling Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. and Ryan Blaney who all used each other up, while Custer breezed by in the outside lane.

Truex would hold on to finish second, while DiBenedetto who gave the epic push on the restart ended up third.

Harvick, who had smoke trailing from his No. 4 car, came home fourth and Kurt Busch, who won this race a year ago, was fifth.

Blaney, Christopher Bell, Aric Almirola, Brad Keselowski and Tyler Reddick rounded out the top-10 finishers on the day.
