If we have learned anything this season, it’s that this playoff format no longer works.
Sunday’s event at Martinsville Speedway delivered some of the best short-track racing we’ve seen at the “paperclip” since the debut of the Gen 7 car. Goodyear’s new tire compound performed well, the tire actually took rubber and enhancing the racing quality. Ryan Blaney delivered a brilliant drive, overtaking Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson in the final stages for the victory.
Unfortunately, these highlights will likely be overshadowed by yet another playoff controversy.
Fans, once again, are questioning the format’s integrity after what they witnessed at Martinsville—a potential breaking point for NASCAR’s playoff system.
The race was marred by controversial team orders in the closing laps, and even a “hail melon” type of move, which left NASCAR scrambling to manage the fallout. Additionally, a glaring error saw NASCAR miss a loose tire from Kyle Busch’s car on Turns 3 and 4, and allowed the race to restart —a costly error that impacted on-track position for several drivers.
Needless to say, NASCAR had their hands full during and after the race as the Xfinity 500 may be remembered more for its controversies than its competitive moments.
Where does NASCAR go from here? Tune in as Taylor Kitchen discusses the race in a new episode of Above The Yellow Line.
