Alexander Rossi led the way in the morning warmup before Sunday’s Detroit Grand Prix from the Raceway at Belle Isle Park.

The 30-year-old logged a total of 17 laps around the 13-turn, 2.35-mile street course and boasted the session’s fastest lap with a 1:05.5816 (111.932mph).

Marcus Ericsson and Scott Dixon, teammates at Chip Ganassi Racing, filled the second and third-place spots. The 2022 Indianapolis 500 winner trailed Rossi’s session-leading lap by 0.3397s, while Dixon clocked in 0.3939s behind the Andretti Autosport driver.

Christian Lundgaard thwarted the weekend-long struggles of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing to post the fourth-quickest time in Sunday’s warmup, while defending series champion, Alex Palou, placed fifth.

Despite posting the fourth-fastest time in the session, Lundgaard nearly threw it all away, after a slip in Turn 3 nearly resulted in a crashed No. 30 RLL Honda. However, the 20-year-old was able to make an incredible save, and continue on without any damage.

Simon Pagenaud, Colton Herta, Pato O’Ward, Graham Rahal, and Felix Rosenqvist completed the top-10 spots.

After an eventful weekend packed with many incidents and spins, Sunday’s 30-minute warmup was relatively clean, in comparison, with only one minor incident early in the session, for Colton Herta’s spin in Turn 3.

While being the fastest in the warmup, Rossi ensured that his competitors understood he was here to race, dicing through traffic to pass three different cars during the session’s out-lap, including a two-for-one pass.

Halfway through the session, Jimmie Johnson spun his No. 48 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda in Turn 12, obtaining minimal damage to his entry after a light tap to the wall with the front wing.
