Chase Elliott suffered a massive impact into the Turn 8 barrier during qualifying for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Grant Park 220 at the Chicago Street Course.

Turns 7 and 8 have been ultra treacherous around the technical 2.220-mile street circuit that carves through downtown Chicago. 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott was the latest to find trouble.

In Round 1 Group A qualifying on Saturday, Elliott misjudged his entry into Turn 7, while following behind Shane van Gisbergen. Elliott clipped the inside concrete barrier in Turn 7, which shot his car hard into the inside barrier for Turn 8.

The No. 9 Hooters Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was destroyed in the impact. Elliott climbed from his car and was taken to the care center for evaluation.
