Joe Nemechek, the all-time NASCAR National Series leader in career starts with 1,197, hopes to add at least one more start to the tally this February.
Nemechek, 58, has a 32-year streak of attempting to make a start in the NASCAR Cup, Xfinity or Truck Series at Daytona Speedweeks, and ‘Front Row Joe’ is doing all he can to extend that streak to 33.
On Sunday’s SiriusXM NASCAR Radio show Frontstretch with Pat Patterson, Nemechek, who attempted but failed to make last year’s Truck Series race in his own NEMCO Motorsports entry, was asked about his Daytona Speedweeks streak and whether it would continue in 2022.
“I’m not sure, we’ve been trying to get some stuff put together and just haven’t been able to get it put together,” Nemechek explained in the interview. “We’re in discussions right now with a couple of folks about possibly driving one of their cars in the Xfinity Series, so, we’ll see what happens.”
Following his appearance on SiriusXM on Sunday, Nemechek confirmed to TobyChristie.com via text message that one of the two teams he has been speaking with about a NASCAR Xfinity Series ride at Daytona is Mike Harmon Racing.
The Florida-native’s last NASCAR Xfinity Series start at Daytona came in February of 2020 for MHR, and it led to surprising results as he scored an impressive 15th-place finish for the team. At the time of that finish, Nemechek’s 15th-place run was tied for the best-ever finish for the Mike Harmon Racing team.
Nemechek also tells TobyChristie.com that he is speaking to a brand new NASCAR Xfinity Series team about Daytona, although he wouldn’t disclose which new team he has been in talks with.
At the end of the day, Nemechek, who has two-career wins at Daytona International Speedway in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, wants to head to Daytona in a competitive situation.
As far as that goes, Nemechek says he has reached the two minute warning of making something happen for 2022, but that he hasn’t given up on throwing a Hail Mary.
“To go [to Daytona] and be competitive, it takes a slew of people and it takes a lot of financial commitment to make that thing go fast. It’s just been really tough lately trying to get all that stuff put together. But I never give up. Right now, I’m at the end, trying to make something go,” Nemechek said on SiriusXM.
