Bubba Wallace Leads Toyota Sweep of Top-Five Spots in Opening Daytona 500 Practice

In Bubba Wallace’s first-ever session on track in the No. 23 23XI Racing Toyota Camry, he wound up P1. Wallace was the quickest in the opening practice session for the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Daytona 500. Wallace edged out a group of his Toyota teammates who swept the top-five spots in the session.

Wallace’s quickest lap in the DoorDash machine was 45.057 seconds or 199.747 mph.

Martin Truex Jr., Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Christopher Bell were second through fifth.

The Spire Motorsports cars, driven by Jamie McMurray and Corey LaJoie, were quick as well. McMurray clocked in sixth, while LaJoie was seventh.

Michael McDowell was eighth while Ryan Newman and Cole Custer rounded out the top-10 fastest in the session.

Ryan Preece was the fastest of the Open cars in the session with a 194.569 mph lap, which slotted him 19th in the session.

Ty Dillon (28th), Kaz Grala (30th), David Ragan (31st), Austin Cindric (32nd), Noah Gragson (36th), Garrett Smithley (37th) and Timmy Hill (38th) are the other Open Cars hoping to work their way into the Daytona 500 field.

Qualifying for the Daytona 500, which will set the front row for Sunday’s Daytona 500 and will also lock in two Open Cars by way of speed, will take place Wednesday night at 7:00 PM ET on FS1.
