Well, mark this down as news you didn’t expect to hear in 2020 — Jeff Hammond is coming out of retirement and will serve as the crew chief for Clay Greenfield and the No. 68 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series team. The news was announced on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio’s Late Shift, which is hosted by Hammond and Jack Arute.

The team is expected to run eight races starting with the season-opening event at Daytona International Speedway. Rackley Roofing will fill the primary sponsorship slate for the team.

However Hammond opened himself up to the possibility of running the full season, if they win Daytona.

“We win Daytona, we’re gonna run for a championship,” said Hammond.

Hammond, 63, hasn’t served as a crew chief since the 2000 NASCAR Cup Series season when he served as crew chief for Chad Little for 27 events and Kurt Busch in seven.

Hammond has 43 wins as a crew chief in NASCAR Cup Series competition and he is a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion crew chief. Now, he’ll try his hand at helping Greenfield hopefully achieve a career-year.

Greenfield has a total of 46 starts in a 10-year Truck Series career.

The 35-year old driver has scored two top-10 finishes. His best finish to date was an eighth-place effort at Talladega in 2017.
