‘The Double’ has become one of the most badass achievements that a driver can attempt in American motorsports. Since 1994, several drivers have attempted to complete the 1,100 miles of on-track action in two drastically different disciplines of racing on the same day.
The Indianapolis 500, the 500-mile NTT IndyCar Series event around the 2.5-mile rectangular Indianapolis Motor Speedway, serves as the opening leg of the feat, while the NASCAR Cup Series Coca-Cola 600, a 400-lap, 600-mile event, at Charlotte Motor Speedway caps off the marathon day.
John Andretti became the first driver to not only attempt to compete in both events on the same day in 1994, but he also became the first driver to pull the achievement off.
Throughout the years, several other drivers have attempted, and fewer have pulled off the accomplishment, but, to date, only one driver — Tony Stewart — has been able to complete all 1,100 miles in a single day, as he finished on the lead lap in the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 in 2001.
While Tony Stewart completed the most successful attempt at ‘The Double,’ Robby Gordon has the most attempts at ‘The Double’ with five, and three times Gordon was able to actually start both races on the same day.
In 1997, Gordon competed in both races, but the Indianapolis 500 was delayed until Monday, May 27, due to weather, so he was unable to compete in both races on the same day on that attempt.
In 2000, Gordon finished sixth in the Indianapolis 500, but due to a lengthy weather delay at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Gordon was unable to make it to Charlotte Motor Speedway in time to start the Coca-Cola 600. P.J. Jones slid behind the wheel of Gordon’s No. 13 NASCAR Cup Series car to take the green flag in the Coca-Cola 600.
While Gordon would eventually arrive at Charlotte Motor Speedway to finish the race, Jones was credited as the driver of record in that race due to the fact that he was the driver who took the green flag.
Gordon would pull off the single-day edition of ‘The Double’ in three consecutive years (2002, 2003, and 2004).
The most recent instance of ‘The Double’ was pulled off by Kyle Larson in 2025. Larson saw a previous bid to achieve ‘The Double’ foiled by weather in 2024, and in 2025, he suffered from early exits from both the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600.
Heading into 2026, six drivers have attempted ‘The Double’ and five of them have actually accomplished the feat, the most recent being Kyle Larson in 2025.
Katherine Legge is set to become the sixth driver to accomplish the feat, as she is entered to compete in the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 in 2026. If Legge is able to pull it off, she’ll become the first female competitor, first non-American, and oldest competitor to ever complete ‘The Double’.
