The 2019 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season got off to a smashing start for a few drivers.

With around 45 minutes remaining in the only practice session of the week for Sunday’s Advance Auto Parts Clash at Daytona, a four-car crash was triggered that involved Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Newman and Chase Elliott.

The incident was started when Elliott tried to move up in front of Newman on the backstretch. However, there wasn’t enough room. The two made contact and Elliott slapped the wall before he gathered it up. The two again made contact which sent Newman for a spin in his No. 6 Wyndham Rewards Ford Mustang.

As a result of the stackup, Harvick got into the back of Hamlin which sent Hamlin into the wall.

Elliott took the blame for the incident after returning to the garage from the infield care center.

“I felt bad, if it was my fault I apologize,” Elliott said. “Yeah it looks like I crowded him. Certainly not a good way to start the week. Hopefully we won’t tear anything else up and we’ll get ready to go for the race tomorrow.”

Hamlin suffered the most severe damage in the crash, and will be going to a backup car foo Sunday’s Clash. Elliott will also be going to a backup car.
