One of the more fun stories of Speedweeks 2019 was Corey LaJoie’s ridiculously awesome Old Spice Dry Shampoo paint scheme. The car featured Lajoie’s face on the hood and was a talking point through practice sessions, qualifying and the early part of the Daytona 500.
However, on lap 21 of the sport’s biggest race things went south for LaJoie. After flat spotting a tire on pit road a couple of laps earlier, LaJoie’s tire shredded down the backstretch. The tire debris brought out a caution, but LaJoie’s No. 32 Ford Mustang was obliterated. The tire carcass had absolutely shredded the right side of his car’s face.
It was an obvious bummer because the paint scheme had been such a focal point of the week, but it was also deflating because Go Fas Racing has been extremely fast in the Daytona 500 in recent years, and they were hoping for another good showing. But competing for a win in this race was never to be.
However, the promising thing is that LaJoie and his team never gave up. They kept the No. 32 in the race and despite going seven laps down due to repairs and totally destroyed aerodynamics, LaJoie was able to limp home to an 18th-place finish.
After the race, LaJoie talked about his day on Twitter.
Driver messed up and flat spotted a RF on a green flag stop. It blew out and made our day tough. We rallied for a p18 finish in my first race with @GoFasRacing32 guys. On to Atlanta.

Sure, a lot of LaJoie’s finish had to do with big crash after big crash late in the race, but nonetheless it was nice to see LaJoie and his team stick with it all day and maximize their finish on what was a tough day.
