Barre, VT — Starting a picture-perfect day on Quarry Hill last Sunday, Thunder Road Speedbowl managing partner Cris Michaud announced the creation of the Squier Cup in honor of late Thunder Road founder Ken Squier with a new granite monument at the Speedbowl he created back in 1960. The Squier Cup is a triple crown series for the Maplefield/Irving Late Models that call Thunder Road home every week, made up of three marquee events with the inaugural champion earning their name in Barre Gray granite and the first name on the new Squier Cup.

Having started off with the 61st Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic 125 on Sunday, Barre’s Cody Blake currently leads the Squier Cup standings over Jason Corliss and Jimmy Hebert. While the Late Models serve as the ‘Thunder and Lightning’ division, coined by Squier so many seasons ago, in weekly track championship action for the ultimate King of the Road honors, the Squier Cup is next contested with the 45th Vermont Governor’s Cup 150 presented by the Vermont Lottery on Thursday, June 20. Defending NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Cole Custer is looking to nab the Governor’s Cup on his first trip to the Nation’s Site of Excitement on June 20 but the weekly warriors and certain American-Canadian Tour invaders will be looking for the same.

The Squier Cup wraps up with the special Jack Daniels Ready to Drink Cocktails 100 on Sunday afternoon, July 7 amidst a busy Fourth of July stretch at Thunder Road. “We wanted to honor and maintain Ken’s memory for many years to come at Thunder Road,” said Thunder Road managing partner Cris Michaud. “It means a lot for a driver to have their name in stone, a true testament to their accomplishments at Thunder Road and we know the Squier Cup will now be at the top of everyone’s list.”

The drive for the inaugural Squier Cup continues on Thursday, June 20 with the 45th Vermont Governor’s Cup 150 presented by the Vermont Lottery before the first champion is crowned on Sunday, July 7 with the Jack Daniels Ready to Drink Cocktails 100.

The brave drivers of Thunder Road return to action on Friday, June 7 with McGee Hyundai of Barre presenting the annual Friday Night kickoff to weekly racing at the Nation’s Site of Excitement. The McGee Hyundai of Barre Friday Special is headlined by a visit from the New England Supermodified Series (NESS) as the lightning-fast rockets take on the highbanks with blistering 10-second lap times. The Maplefield/Irving Late Models, Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers, rk Miles Street Stocks and Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors will also be in attendance for the start of weekly championship racing at Thunder Road with a 7:00pm Post Time on Friday, June 7.
