Video: Tyler Ankrum and Chandler Smith Crash Late in Stage 1 of Truck Series Dirt Race at Bristol

The horrendous start to the 2021 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season continued for Tyler Ankrum in Monday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Pinty’s Dirt Race at Bristol.

With six laps left in the opening Stage, Chandler Smith was tapped by Austin Wayne Self, which sent his No. 18 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota Tundra spinning. As the field reached Smith, many missed hitting him, but Ankrum had nowhere to go.

Ankrum was scored 40th in the running order, six laps off the pace at the conclusion of Stage 1, and has since retired for the remainder of the race. This marks his third DNF in five starts this season, and he has just one top-20 finish, which was an 18th-place effort last weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Heading into this race, Ankrum was sitting precariously in the 27th-spot in the championship standings.

Smith was able to stay just one lap down, and could potentially work his way back into contention.
