William Byron’s return to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series went up in smoke after his engine expired on Lap 79 of Friday’s Rackley Roofing 200.

The North Carolina driver was racing in the top 10 just prior to the caution for fluid on the track thanks to his engine.

Byron told FOX Sports’ Jamie Little following the failure that the engine was stumbling on occasion before finally letting go.

The failure marks his first DNF in Trucks since Phoenix in 2016, and his second overall this season with his first coming in Cup at Sonoma.

Derek Kraus claimed the Stage one victory at Nashville while Chandler Smith took Stage two.
