Video: Three-Wide Battle for Second Triggers 12-Car Wreck in Final Stage at Phoenix

Several drivers competing for the victory in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Phoenix Raceway have sustained major damage after a 12-car incident broke out in the late stages of the Call811.com Every Dig. Every Time. 200.

The incident began with a three-wide battle for the runner-up spot between Chandler Smith, John Hunter Nemechek, and Riley Herbst, which went awry after the three cars were close enough to breathe the same oxygen.

When Smith contacted Nemechek, the No. 20 Toyota GR Supra spun down the racetrack, side-swiped Riley Herbst, and collected several other cars, many innocent bystanders.

One of the cars involved in the accident was Sam Mayer, whose horrific start to the season has gotten even worse, with three DNFs in the opening four NASCAR Xfinity Series events of 2024.

Also involved in the incident were Hailie Deegan, William Byron, Aric Almirola, John Hunter Nemechek, Austin Hill, Jeb Burton, Parker Retzlaff, Ryan Ellis, Brennan Poole, Chandler Smith, and Riley Herbst.

Nemechek, Deegan, Mayer, Retzlaff, and Burton were all forced to retire from the event with significant damage. Meanwhile, Herbst, Almirola, Byron, Ellis, and many of the others involved were able to continue.
