The race team that refuses to fall in line with the way things have always been done in NASCAR, Trackhouse Racing, is shaking up the status quo again.

On Tuesday, Trackhouse Racing announced the creation of PROJECT91, a brand new NASCAR Cup Series entry which will be designed to expand the international reach of the team by allowing renowned international racing drivers a seat to compete in the highest form of NASCAR racing.

While no drivers have been officially announced, Trackhouse states that the No. 91 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will race at least once in the NASCAR Cup Series during the 2022 season.

“PROJECT91’s mission is to activate the intersection point of NASCAR racing and global motorsport culture,” said Trackhouse Co-owner Justin Marks.

Marks and Trackhouse felt the time was right for this move as the NextGen car has changed how the sport operates.

“I truly believe the NexGen car represents an opportunity for NASCAR to enter the global professional motorsport conversation,” Marks explained. “We now have a race vehicle with international technological relevance where world-class drivers from other disciplines can compete at NASCAR’s highest level without the steep learning curve that the previous generation cars required.”

As a result, Marks says the NextGen car includes components which help shorten the learning curve for drivers from other disciplines making their move to stock cars.

Marks said, “Vehicle advancements used in other forms of motorsports, such as, diffusers, independent rear suspension, the sequential gearbox, and other more common components, have resulted in a platform much less reliant on intimate proprietary stock car knowledge, which has historically made any transition to NASCAR difficult.

“With the formation of PROJECT91, Trackhouse has opened the door for global champions while beginning the process of scaling into an internationally recognized racing brand.”

Trackhouse Racing’s press release states that they will announce their first driver for PROJECT91 in the coming days.
