According to a report from NBC Sports’ Daniel McFadin, Erik Jones is in the midst of getting a contract extension with Joe Gibbs Racing and that the 22-year-old driver has no plans to leave the organization.

With the ultra talented Christopher Bell waiting in the wings, many have pointed to Jones as the odd man out at JGR to make room for Bell. However, if Jones does indeed extend his deal Bell’s path to the Cup Series will have to come at the expense of Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin or Martin Truex Jr.

Or Bell could sign with a different team than JGR (a second Leavine Family Racing car perhaps?).

Jones, who won the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona last year, has recorded three top-10 finishes in seven starts this season. Jones currently sits 16th in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Standings.
