Massive news for fans of NASCAR. On Thursday, NASCAR revealed that for the first time ever, they will be providing fans with in-car cameras for every NASCAR Cup Series car in the field beginning with this weekend’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway.
According to a press release from NASCAR, the camera views will be provided free of charge as a part of NASCAR Drive, the sanctioning body’s hub for live race-day video and real-time stats and information, which is hosted on NASCAR.com as well as the NASCAR Mobile App.
Importantly, NASCAR states that this full-field in-car camera stream service will remain a free, ad-supported offering for the remainder of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs and beyond.
“Our goal is to deliver an immersive experience for the most passionate fans in all of sports, no matter where they are,” said Tim Clark, NASCAR senior vice president and chief digital officer in the release from NASCAR. “We know the significant role second screens play in the overall viewing experience, so to provide live video from inside every car and alongside leaderboards, performance data, pit stats, live betting odds, and more is something we’re excited about.”
According to NASCAR, this new full-field in-car camera option became possible with the Next Gen car, which was designed to accommodate a standard camera mount near the rearview mirror in every race car.
With a full field at their finger tips, fans will be able to have four different cars streaming on their screen at one time. Fans can also add a paid subscription to listen into the team’s radio communications in addition to the free in-car cameras.
The cameras used will be 1080p HD cameras, which will be pointed forward out the front windshield. Cameras will come courtesy of NEP Group/Broadcast Sports International, which will feed the live footage across Amazon Web Services where it will directly be sent into NASCAR Drive.
