Layne Riggs has impressed a lot of people over his last three seasons driving full-time in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series ranks. Apparently, the driver has a chance at promotion to the NASCAR Cup Series ranks, according to what Riggs said during an interview with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on Friday.
When questioned about his plans for the 2027 NASCAR season, Riggs responded that at this juncture in silly season, he’s not entirely sure what the future holds for him, but that he’d like to dip his toes into the NASCAR Cup Series at some point this season.
“I would like to know my plans, too,” Riggs quipped. “I’m not sure either. We don’t have any plans yet, we’re just trying to figure out how early silly season works out first to see if there’s an opportunity for me, but I’d like to make my first [Cup Series] start at some point, this year would be great, but it’s not looking great for the timeline of having to get your first start before ‘The Chase’ starts in Cup.”
When pressed further about whether a Cup ride is a possibility for the 2027 season, Riggs responded, “It is,” but said there was no news to report just yet.
If a team were to take a chance on moving Riggs up to the NASCAR Cup Series full-time for the 2027 season, they could certainly make worse decisions. Riggs has shown himself to be quite capable of wheeling stock cars throughout his young NASCAR National Series career.
Riggs, the current NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series point leader, has already racked up four victories this season, which have come at the St. Petersburg Street Course, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Nashville Superspeedway, and the San Diego Street Course.
Overall, Riggs has now amassed nine victories in NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series competition in just 68 career starts. It’s been quite the climb for the Front Row Motorsports driver, who showed signs of brilliance during his rookie season, but ultimately missed the Playoffs in his maiden Truck Series campaign.
After missing out on the postseason in 2024, Riggs would immediately reel off his first two career victories, which came in back-to-back starts at the Milwaukee Mile and Bristol Motor Speedway. Since then, Riggs has been one of the dominant forces in the series.
Will the 2027 season hold a return to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series? Or will Riggs get a shot at the NASCAR Cup Series?
Only time will tell, but Riggs has definitely proven that he’s capable of achieving success regardless of which opportunity comes his way.
