*Editor’s note: This story previously speculated that Meier’s retirement was related to Matt DiBenedetto bringing a new spotter with him in 2020, that was incorrect.

A long-time member of the NASCAR community will be stepping away from the competition side of things following Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Joey Meier, who has been a spotter in NASCAR for 23 years, will not return to the spotter’s stand in 2020 according to a Tweet from Lee Spencer.

Meier, who had spotted for Brad Keselowski since 2006 — including his 2012 Championship season — was moved to Paul Menard’s No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing team in 2019.

With Menard retiring at season’s end, the No. 21 team will have a lot of new faces in 2020.

According to Spencer, Meier — who is a pilot — will stay involved with the sport as he will become Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s pilot.

  1. Geez, what kind of life do you have to live to be involved in the NASCAR community and get paid for it for over two decades, and THEN, when you retire, you move on the piloting a plane for Dale Earnhardt Jr??? Holy s&%t, this man is blessed! I am very happy for him and his family.
