Since being overhauled and reconfigured in 2017, Texas Motor Speedway has become one of the most unpredictable racetracks on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule.
The 1.5-mile facility in Fort Worth, Texas, lived up to its well-earned reputation swimmingly on Sunday, in an event that featured a total of 12 caution flags and several twists throughout the afternoon, that culminated in a NASCAR Overtime finish.
After starting from a disappointing 27th-place, and spending much of the 271-lap contest climbing his way through the pack, defending NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano was able to take the lead late to earn the victory in Sunday’s Würth 400.
Logano was able to defend his position against Ross Chastain and Team Penske teammate Ryan Blaney in NASCAR Overtime, but it was the move that he made beforehand that ultimately scored him his 37th win in the NASCAR Cup Series.
The Middletown, Connecticut-native was locked in a fierce battle for the lead with Michael McDowell in the late stages of the event, when the Spire Motorsports driver slid wide and opened the door for the No. 22 AAA Ford Mustang.
As the pair raced hard down the backstretch, McDowell threw an aggressive block on Logano, driving him all the way down to the apron at the entrance to Turn 3, before moving up the racetrack and allowing the three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion to slide into the lead.
Three laps later, McDowell would slip up exiting Turn 2 and slam the outside wall, ending what had been an incredible Cinderella story up until that point in the event.
Logano would ultimately beat the No. 1 Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge Chevrolet to the start-finish line by 0.346 seconds, to capture his first victory of the season, and his first top-five of the season for that matter.
“The sport changes so quickly. It’s crazy how you can just ride these roller coasters and just proud of the team,” said Logano.
Last weekend at Talladega Superspeedway, Logano was poised to finish in fifth place before he was disqualified in post-race inspection for having a bolt loose in the rear spoiler, which totally derailed a solid effort.
Then, after a tough qualifying effort on Saturday, the No. 22 team had to fight its way to the front of the pack throughout a long afternoon in Texas.
“Slowly, methodically, a couple at a time. We had a really tough pit stall situation. The pit crew did a good job of managing that and just grabbed a couple here and there. The car was fast. I knew that yesterday. We just did a poor job qualifying. Just grinded it. Just keep grinding a couple here and a couple there, and eventually get a win here. It’s nice to get one. Real nice.”
Ross Chastain finished in second place, grabbing his second top-five result of the 2025 season and his best finish since winning last Fall at Kansas Speedway. Ryan Blaney, Logano’s teammate at Team Penske, finished a solid third place.
RESULTS: 2025 NCS Würth 400 at Texas Motor Speedway
Kyle Larson, after leading the most laps in Sunday’s event (90), faded to a fourth-place finish at the end of 271 laps. Erik Jones rounded out the top five, scoring his first top-five of the season for LEGACY MOTOR CLUB.
Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. brought home a solid sixth-place finish, with Austin Dillon, John Hunter Nemechek, Christopher Bell, and Daniel Suarez rounding out the top-10.
The race featured 13 different leaders, including Austin Cindric, who led 60 laps but faded back in the pack before getting involved in a late-race accident that relegated him to a 25th-place finish.
Josh Berry also led a significant portion of the 400-mile contest early, before crashing in Turn 4 from the race lead, which ultimately ended his chances at collecting his second NASCAR Cup Series victory of the season.
After Texas, William Byron continues to hold a 13-point lead in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings over Kyle Larson in second. Denny Hamlin, Chase Elliott, and Tyler Reddick complete the top five in points.
Next, the NASCAR Cup Series goes to Kansas Speedway, which last season produced the closest finish in the history of the NASCAR Cup Series between Kyle Larson and Chris Buescher.
Coverage of the AdventHealth 400 will take place on Sunday, May 11 at 3:00 PM ET on FS1, MRN, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.
