James Davison will make his NASCAR Cup Series debut this weekend in the GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. Davison, 33, will pilot the Spire Motorsports No. 77 Chevrolet Camaro, the team announced on Tuesday by way of a press release.

According to the release, the entry will be fielded in cooperation with Byrd Racing and Hayward Motorsports with OilFire Whiskey will step up to sponsor the effort.

“I am excited to make my NASCAR Cup Series and stock car oval debut at Talladega,” said Davison in the release. “My goal will be to ride and survive, run all 500 miles and learn the fine details of restrictor-plate racing.”

Sunday’s race will be a culture shock of sorts for the driver who has made a living running road courses.

Davison, who hails from Australia, has four previous starts in NASCAR Xfinity Series competition and he is a five-time Indianapolis Motor Speedway starter. The driver was expected to make his debut in the season-opening Daytona 500, but the expected official announcement of a ride never came.
