Ross Chastain has had a rough week in Indianapolis. His No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet was subpar in practice and qualifying on Saturday, which led to the driver starting from the 33rd position in the 39-car field.

Chastain saw his rough weekend get even worse as he went for a wild ride on Lap 17 of Sunday’s crown jewel, Brickyard 400.

Heading into Turn 3 on lap 17, Chastain cut in front of Michael McDowell, who told his team on the radio that Chastain had braked quite a bit harder than he expected heading into the turn. As a result, McDowell made contact with the rear of Chastain’s No. 1 car, which sent Chastain crashing into the outside wall.

And here is an additional view of the incident from the onboard cameras inside of Chastain’s No. 1 car and McDowell’s No. 71 car:

Incredibly, Chastain was able to use the airjack system to drive his battered race car away from the scene of the accident, but his bid to win is over as he’s multiple laps down as his team continues to survey the damage.

  1. McDowell needs penalty for his actions. You don’t crash Chastain without consequences. FINE MCDOWELL AND MAYBE HE WILL THINK TWICE BEFORE DOING STUPID STUFF. ?
