Video: Teammate’s Last Lap Gaffe Costs Jake Drew ARCA West Championship, Jesse Love Collects Title Instead

Absolute heartbreak for Sunrise Ford Racing and their driver Jake Drew on the final lap of Saturday’s ARCA Menards Series West season finale at Phoenix Raceway.

Drew had a one point advantage over Bill McAnally Racing’s Jesse Love, but on the final lap of the race, Drew’s teammate Trevor Huddleston seemingly appeared to think the race was over and slowed his car down.

Huddleston’s lack of awareness — if that’s indeed what happened — allowed Love to get by for the spot and the point he needed to tie Drew for the points lead. Love won the championship by way of a tie breaker.

It appeared impossible for Drew to lose the point lead, so much so, that the NBC Trackpass broadcast team even proclaimed Drew the champion when the race ended. Moments later, the gravity of what had happened slipped in.

This is the second-consecutive ARCA Menards Series West championship for 16-year old Jesse Love.
