It was a successful weekend of racing for NASCAR Cup Series star Daniel Suárez, who contested two preliminary races at Autódromo de Interlagos on Saturday, and the final race of Round five of the 2024 NASCAR Brasil Series season on Sunday.
Suárez started the weekend off by being the fastest driver in opening practice on Friday, and he backed that up with a stirring performance in the opening preliminary race on Saturday at Interlagos. Suárez climbed from fourth to the lead on the final lap of that event, and initially was scored the winner of the race.
However, after series officials declared Suárez to have been overly aggressive as he made contact to force his way from fourth to the lead, he was hit with a five-second penalty, which dropped him to a sixth-place finish overall in the opening prelim event.
Here is a video of the final lap of the opening Preliminary event:
Fun last lap though!! Shame they took the win away from us, still trying to understand the rules here in Brazil, definitely different than NASCAR in the ?? Race 2 coming up! pic.twitter.com/2mD9BVknFF

While Suárez was disappointed about missing out on the win in prelim No. 1 due to a time penalty, he would be on the opposite end of things in the next race. Suárez would come home in the runner-up position in the second preliminary event on Saturday evening in Brazil but would be elevated to the race winner after it was determined that the winner of that event had incurred a time penalty.

On Sunday, Suárez finished off his bucket list-checking weekend at Interlagos off with a fourth-place finish. The driver explained on X after the race that his No. 91 car struggled with the brakes in the third race of the weekend, but he says the experience was incredible in the NASCAR Brasil Series.

After getting married to his longtime girlfriend Julia Piquet on Tuesday, Suárez went on to have a very successful weekend on-track at Interlagos, and now, he’ll head back home to the United States as the NASCAR Cup Series is set to return to action at Richmond Raceway next weekend after a two-week hiatus during the Olympic games.
