Scott Dixon Paces Fast 12 Practice Ahead of Qualifying Battle for Indy 500 Pole

Scott Dixon posted the quickest time in Fast 12 practice ahead of the second day of qualifying for the 106th Running of the Indianapolis 500.

The 41-year-old New Zealander pounded the pavement with a fastest single lap at 234.042 mph in the No. 9 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

Ed Carpenter, the only driver/owner in the NTT IndyCar Series, went second-quickest in the session at 233.624 mph. Rinus VeeKay, who set the pace in Saturday’s first day of qualifying, ended up third on the board at 233.597 mph.

Takuma Sato and Jimmie Johnson rounded out the rest of the top five.

Marcus Ericsson was sixth at 233.355 mph, followed by the No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet of Pato O’Ward in seventh. Tony Kanaan was eighth and reigning series champion Alex Palou directly behind to put all five Chip Ganass cars in the top nine.

Will Power, the lone Team Penske driver in the Fast 12, was 10th.

Dixon also led in four-lap average pace at 233.774 mph. Ericsson was second in the category with a run at 233.283 mph, ahead of CGR teammate Johnson, who hit a four-lap best of 233.261 in the No. 48 Honda.

Carpenter was the best Chevrolet-powered driver in fourth of the four-lap average runs at 232.958 mph, ahead of O’Ward in fifth.
