The No. 4 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet team have been handed a grid penalty for Sunday’s NTT IndyCar Series race from the Raceway at Belle Isle, the Detroit Grand Prix.

Dalton Kellett will start six places further down the starting grid from wherever he qualifies on Saturday. The penalty stems from the AFR team swapping their engine before the start of the Indianapolis 500 last weekend.

In Monday’s practice after qualifying for the Indy 500 two weeks ago, Kellett met the wall in Turn 1 after getting forced to run wide with Romain Grosjean holding the inside line. The incident led the team to completely repair the left side of the car and replace the engine.

Last season’s IndyCar champion, Alex Palou, had similar issues from the 2021 Indianapolis 500 weekend leading into Detroit. The No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda team was assessed the same penalty last season as the one Kellett was issued on Friday for the engine replacement.

Kellett, 28, sits 29th in the NTT IndyCar Series championship standings after six races. In 30-career starts, the Ontario, Canada-native has a career-best finish of 12th, which came at Gateway in 2021.
