Jimmie Johnson underwent surgery to repair his fractured right hand sustained from a crash during a practice session for the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Dr. Glenn Gaston, the Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship Director at OrthoCarolina, performed the surgery on Monday evening.

Johnson is expected to be ready to be back behind the wheel of the No. 48 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda for the upcoming open test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (April 20-21).

The injury happened with roughly 16 minutes remaining opening practice last Friday, where Johnson bottomed out hitting the curb entering Turn 5. The momentum carried him into the tire barrier located on the outside of corner exit. A carbon fiber splint was put together overnight, which allowed him to continue on with the rest of the weekend.

Trouble continued to find Johnson, though, as he crashed in the second practice session on Saturday morning before ending the weekend with another crash on Lap 70 of 85 in the 85-lap race. He was credited with a 20th-place finish.

Johnson currently sits 14th in the 2022 NTT IndyCar Series championship standings.
