INDIANAPOLIS — Friday’s second NTT IndyCar Series practice session for Saturday’s GMR Grand Prix featured a young charger and a seasoned veteran as Alex Palou led the 45-minute session.

The Spaniard turned a fastest lap of 1 minute, 9.9383 seconds to average 125.545 mph around the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course in the No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Second fastest by just over three tenths of a second was Christian Lundgaard in the No. 45 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda. Lundgaard was also second in the morning practice session.

Third fastest was Pato O’Ward in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet, .0024 seconds behind Lundgaard. O’Ward led the Friday morning practice session.

The session was highlighted by Helio Castroneves’s engine expiring in the No. 06 Meyer Shank Racing Honda. The four-time Indianapolis 500 winner was committed to pit road when his engine let go. Castroneves said that the engine was a new one, installed for the month of May.

IndyCar qualifying is at 4:00 p.m. ET and will air live on Peacock.
