Josef Newgarden turned the quickest lap of opening practice for the NTT IndyCar Series Hy-Vee Homefront 250 at Iowa Speedway. Newgarden turned in a lap time of 18.2420 sec., which equates to 176.428 mph.

Newgarden was 0.0477 sec. faster than his Team Penske teammate Scott McLaughlin in the session.

Marcus Ericsson, who ranked third fastest in the session, turned 126 laps in the opening practice of the weekend, which was the most of any competitor in Practice 1.
