Sam Mayer was so frustrated with Ryan Truex in the closing laps of Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Martinsville Speedway that he had to use his hands to express his feelings, showing a universal sign of displeasure on the backstretch.

Riley Herbst and Sam Mayer were both having incredible runs during Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Martinsville, but the results won’t show that, after a crash late in the 250-lap contest.

The accident started when Ryan Truex, driving the No. 19 Toyota GR Supra for Joe Gibbs Racing, went for a deep lunge into the first corner, making contact with Sam Mayer entering the first corner.

Mayer had no hope of saving his No. 1 Chevrolet Camaro, and went spinning around into the first corner, slamming into Riley Herbst and sending him into the outside wall, causing significant damage to the Stewart-Haas Racing driver.

Then, as Mayer, driving for JR Motorsports, was spinning, he came down the track and clipped Jeb Burton, before slamming into the inside wall and destroying his Accelerate Pros sponsored entry.

After the fact, Mayer wasn’t impressed with the move from Truex, and showed his displeasure by virtue of extending a particular finger, which is usually associated with frustration.

“Classic Martinsville,” Sam Mayer told members of the media after the accident. “Sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong.”

This isn’t the first scuffle that Mayer has had with drivers at Joe Gibbs Racing, after getting into a fight on pit road with Ty Gibbs last year at this same track, which he referenced in a tongue-in-cheek comment post-race.

“I’m not allowed to say anything negative about those guys over there, so I’m going to keep it to myself.”

Regardless, both Herbst and Mayer earned poor finishes as a result of the accident, while Truex went on to finish the race and score a solid result.
