On Point Motorsports, which fields the No. 30 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, has tapped Jonathan Shafer to make his series debut with the organization at Martinsville Speedway.

Shafer, a member of the Toyota Racing Development program, has been racing since he was four and a half years old, racing USAC quarter midgets, before moving into National USAC Midget racing with Keith Kunz Motorsports, including a run in the Chili Bowl Nationals.

Throughout his career, Shafer has also competed in the World of Outlaw Dirt Sprint Cars, Late Models in the CARS Late Model Tour, and most recently the ARCA Menards Series, where he contested events for Venturini Motorsports.

A native of Ashland, Ohio, Shafer resides in the same hometown as Tim Richmond, giving him another connection in a tight-knit spot. Todd, Jonathan’s father, formerly competed in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

“I’m beyond excited to make my first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race with On Point Motorsports at one of my favorite tracks, Martinsville Speedway,” said Shafer. “I consider this to be my home track because my mom’s family lives right down the road and I have spent a lot of time in this area when I was growing up.”

In mid-June, Shafer will turn 18, allowing him a more expansive selection of tracks to choose from when crafting a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule. Until then, the up-and-coming driver will have a stick to tracks under 1.25 miles, and the remaining road course event at Mid-Ohio.

“My goal is to give Steven Lane, and the team a good finish and to run every lap with no damage. With funding and sponsorship, I hope to run seven more races this year with On Point.”

In a pair of ARCA Menards Series East starts for Venturini Motorsports last season, Shafer finished fourth and seventh in a pair of stacked fields at Iowa Speedway and Bristol Motor Speedway.

Sponsorship for the effort will come from Auto’s by Nelson, Osgar’s Auto Body, Solid Rock Carriers, Slinger Print Works, Tri Star Racewear, and Rangeline Group.
