Alexander Rossi laid down the fastest lap in a wreck and spin-filled second Detroit Grand Prix practice on Saturday morning from the Raceway at Belle Isle Park.
At the wheel of the No. 27 Andretti Autosport Honda, Rossi went to the top of the board with a lap time of 1m15.8101s, as the the Firestone alternate red tires were fitted on for the first time this weekend. Simon Pagenaud, who was stalled on the track in the closing minutes, finished 0.0702s behind the session’s fastest circuit.
The No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet of Josef Newgarden completed the session in third and sat 0.1017s slower than Rossi. Slotted in fourth was Meyer Shank Racing’s Hélio Castroneves, both of Andretti’s aligned cars showed strength before qualifying.
David Malukas rounded out the top five after an early collision with fellow rookie Kyle Kirkwood.
Scott McLaughlin concluded the session in sixth as Felix Rosenqvist, Devlin DeFrancesco, Alex Palou and Romain Grosjean closed the top 10. Like on Friday, only three Chevrolets and seven Hondas in the first 10 spots.
Dalton Kellett had the second incident in the session, that incident being of the single car variety. The No. 4 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet drove off Turn 13 and carried too much momentum which led to Kellett’s slam into the outside concrete wall.

Two separate spins occurred with Jimmie Johnson and Will Power losing control of their cars. Johnson had an issue as he exited pit-road and was left backwards in Turn 2. Power slid off Turn 11 and tried to collect the No. 12 Penske Chevrolet as he successfully avoided the outside tire barriers.
Both cars left unscathed similar to Romain Grosjean’s near miss with the wall at the exit of the hairpin. It is unknown if the No. 28 Andretti Honda has minor damage because the Swiss-born Frenchman pulled into pit-lane on that same lap.
