The history between Sam Mayer and Ty Gibbs has been well-documented. Friday at Martinsville, that history has come to a boiling point, after the second-year driver moved Gibbs out of the way in the final corner at Martinsville Speedway.

Mayer’s last-lap move wasn’t even for the victory, though, but rather for a $100,000 bonus as part of the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ annual Dash 4 Cash initiative. However, the aggressive move cost both drivers the bonus, handing it to AJ Allmendinger.

Ty Gibbs – a three-time winner in the series this season — was not pleased with Mayer about the last-lap move, and made many attempts to crash the JR Motorsports driver on the cool-down lap.

The pair entered pit road and climbed from their cars, Ty Gibbs was visibly upset with Mayer, marching over to his car and immediately confronting him. After Gibbs made the first person-to-person contact with Mayer, the pair engaged in some yelling and shoving.

After the inertia of the shoving brought the pair in front of Gibbs’ car on pit road, the huddle started to get more intense, which ultimately led to the Joe Gibbs Racing driver throwing the first punch directly to Mayer’s head – with his helmet on (!).

From that point, things got messy, as an all-our brawl developed on pit road, with NASCAR Officials and various others on pit road getting involved in the massive mess, with more and more punches being thrown.

For Gibbs, who had already been called to the NASCAR hauler for failing to slow immediately for the caution flag, the discussion with NASCAR Officials will likely be pivoted to the post-race incident, at least the majority of it, anyway.
