It was a heartbreaking Speedweeks at Daytona for Austin Theriault. The driver was attempting to secure a place in the season-opening NextEra Energy 250 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series race, but in the end he was sent packing when he didn’t qualify fast enough.

However, now it appears Theriault is closing in on a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series opportunity.

According to an interview with the Bangor Daily News, Theriault says he is close to striking a deal to run a few races in a second part-time Cup Series car for Go Fas Racing.

“The chances are better than ever,” the 25-year-old Theriault said in the story. “I’ve been working very hard with companies Archie has relationships with at that level of racing, companies that are adamant they want to do [sponsor] a race in the Cup Series. We have to close a few deals.”

Go Fas Racing of course currently fields the No. 32 car that is driven by Corey LaJoie.
