Trevor Sanborn, Kyle Reid Win 75-Lap Qualifiers for Celebration of America 300 at Oxford Plains

Tuesday night’s 75-lap qualifiers set the field for Wednesday’s All That’s Metal Celebration of America 300 at Oxford Plains Speedway. Trevor Sanborn scored the win in the first qualifier, while Kyle Reid won the second qualifier.

Trevor Sanborn Sets Sail For Qualifier #1 Victory

Earlier this season, Trevor Sanborn guaranteed himself a provisional starting position in the Celebration of America 300 with a victory in a qualifying race. He established on Tuesday he didn’t need a provisional to make his way into Wednesday’s field.

Sanborn charged from fifth to first 11 laps into Qualifier #1, leading the rest of the way to secure the win. Sanborn, who leads the Oxford Championship Series Super Late Model standings, finished ahead of Johnny Clark and Joe Pastore.

“I honestly wasn’t going that hard,” said Sanborn. “I was trying to save it. Johnny was getting there at the end, but I was just pedaling it, trying to keep the tires under it. I’ve got to thank Richard Moody for putting us in this ride.”

It’s not a surprise to see Johnny Clark up front at Oxford Plains. By his own admission, however, the 2020 Oxford 250 winner has struggled in recent years at the track.

That makes Tuesday’s runner-up quite the confidence booster going into the main event on Wednesday.

“It needs to be a little better, but it’s definitely in the right direction,” said Clark. “I just told Joey I’m happy as hell we finished on the lead lap after 75 laps here. It’s been a long road here basically since we won the 250 in 2020. Just haven’t had what we need.

“We seem to find it every now and then, but today it’s been really good. We’ll try to build off this and make it a little better for tomorrow.”

After finishing fifth in Oxford Championship Series points one year ago, Joe Pastore hasn’t been a frequent visitor to Oxford Plains Speedway thus far in 2024. However, Pastore picked up where he left off with a third-place effort on Tuesday.

“I’m happy with that,” said Pastore. “Me and the crew, this is only our second time here this year. We don’t have much lap time here. We’ve run it a lot last year, but it’s only our second time this year. I’m pretty proud with that.”

Corey Bubar finished fourth, with Brandon Barker rounding out the top five.

Reid Dominates, Rowdy Charges in Qualifier #2

Kyle Reid drew the pole position for the second qualifier and never relinquished the lead, leading all 75 laps to take the win.

“It was huge,” Reid told Racing America about the win. “We’ve struggled here before. We’ve come down a couple of shows this year. This was on our radar all year. It seemed like every time we come down here, we either got wrecked or got rained out the other two. We didn’t know how this was going to go. We’ve done a lot of work in the past two days here, and it seems to be paying off.”

Joey Doiron finished second, with Tim Brackett passing D.J. Shaw with three laps to go to claim the third position.

“We’ve still got a little more work to do,” said Doiron. “Timmy was coming at the end. We didn’t get to race him the last race because we broke. The 42 got way out ahead, and without a caution, we weren’t going to catch him. Just take care of the tires, get ready for tomorrow. We’ve got a good starting spot. Hopefully, nothing breaks. We should have a decent chance at it.”

Behind the front runners, there was no shortage of excitement. Part of that excitement came from none other than Kyle Busch. The two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion drew the final starting position in the second qualifier and drove to eighth place in the final running order.

“Just trying to work on cars,” said Busch about his day. “Trying to make it fast, trying to get the feel. It started out really, really loose. Obviously, the track was super hot earlier in the day. We made some pretty good gains in the car to get some rear grip in it and make it feel better. During the race, it just started getting a little bit tight while still being loose.”

Busch’s Cup Series spotter, Derek Kneeland, finished 11th, while fellow NASCAR Cup Series competitor Daniel Hemric finished 12th.

Tuesday’s qualifiers set the stage for Wednesday’s All That’s Metal Celebration of America 300. The $40,000-to-win feature headlines a racing card that also includes a $10,000-to-win New England Supermodified Series race and the Little Webb’s 350 Super Series.
