Austin Hill isn’t going to be advancing to the Championship 4 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (at least when it comes to the Driver’s Playoffs), but it must feel nice to get the No. 21 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet back in Victory Lane, winning Saturday’s United Rentals 250 at Talladega Superspeedway.
The Hampton, Georgia-native put on a clinic in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series event, leading a race-high 48 of 100 laps to secure his 14th win in the second-tier series, ten of which have come on a drafting-style racetrack, like EchoPark Speedway, Daytona International Speedway, or Talladega Superspeedway.
Despite some fuel concerns, the No. 21 Bennett Transportation Chevrolet was able to defend against JR Motorsports teammates Carson Kvapil and Justin Allgaier, who came up just short of the victory. For Kvapil, a win would have gotten him out of a troubling points position and put the No. 1 Chevrolet in the Championship 4.
Christian Eckes managed to secure another solid result in the No. 16 Chevrolet, with a fourth, while Alpha Prime Racing co-owner Caesar Bacarella placed the No. 5 Mongoose Power Solutions Chevrolet, a fourth entry for the organization, inside the top-five with a fifth-place finish.
Blaine Perkins collected another top-10 on the season, finishing sixth in the Jordan Anderson Racing No. 31 Chevrolet, while Parker Retzlaff was seventh, Leland Honeyman eighth for Cope Family Racing, and NASCAR Xfinity Series playoff drivers Sammy Smith in ninth, and Jesse Love in 10th.
The afternoon saw a litany of issues for drivers in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs, with several multi-car incidents hampering the drivers’ chances at getting to Victory Lane, or even collecting a solid finish. The first of those came at Lap 15, and unfortunately, came at the expense of Sheldon Creed, Sam Mayer, and Brandon Jones, all of whom had too much damage to continue being competitive.
Connor Zilisch was a victim of a wreck at Lap 46, when Connor Mosack slammed into the outside SAFER Barrier and collected Dean Thompson, William Sawalich, and Leland Honeyman, among others. Zilisch’s streak of 18 top-five finishes in a row in the second-tier series has now come to an end.
William Sawalich, who was slammed against the outside SAFER Barrier in the accident, was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.
The NASCAR Xfinity Series will now determine its Championship 4 with a trip to Martinsville Speedway, with Connor Zilisch and Justin Allgaier already guaranteed spots in the Championship Race, and six others left to fight it out.
