On Saturday, Garrett Smithley announced via Twitter that he will pilot the No. 99 entry for BJ McLeod Motorsports for the full 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series schedule. While Smithley had previously been announced as full-time for the team, back in November, the No. 99 is a change from the original announcement.

Smithley was originally slated to run the No. 78 entry for the 2023 season. Overall, it’s not a massive change, but it is an interesting one. In his Tweet, Smithley states that the No. 99, “has been a cool number for me, so I’m definitely excited to bring it back full-time in @XfinityRacing!”

Per the original announcement of Smithley’s full-time stint with BJ McLeod Motorsports, the 30-year-old driver will have sponsorship from longtime partner Trophy Tractor.

The Pennsylvania native has 145-career starts in NASCAR Xfinity Series competition and he has recorded one top-five finish and five top-10s. Smithley has not run full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series since the 2019 campaign, where he drove for JD Motorsports.

Smithley’s career-best finish in NASCAR Xfinity Series competition was a fifth-place effort in the 2018 season-opening event at Daytona International Speedway. He’ll look to top that finish in February.

In addition to his NASCAR Xfinity Series resume, Smithley has 76 starts in the NASCAR Cup Series and nine NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series starts to his credit.
