Whoa! Zane Smith Says He’s Thankful For Window Nets After Scary Crash in Truck Race at Daytona

On Sunday, Reaume Brothers Racing streamed video of the carnage left on pit road following Sunday’s NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series Sunoco 159 at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course. However, something crazy was spotted on Zane Smith’s No. 21 truck at the B-Pillar location.

Immediately, you assume that perhaps a chunk of weighted ballast possibly caused this as the damage is incredible. However, Smith took to Twitter to answer what the catalyst was for the damage:

Twitter User Ian Vyhonsky captured video of the incident from the stands (h/t to @dropthejackpod for sharing the tweet with us), and while it happens a decent distance away from the camera, it appears that the rear spoiler of Natalie Decker’s truck is what caused the damage to Smith’s truck.

While the crash isn’t what you typically think of when you think of bad accidents in NASCAR, this could have been really bad as Decker struck Smith’s truck in the B-pillar, which is right in the region where the driver’s head sits in the truck. Smith was very thankful for the window net, and we should all be thankful Smith finished the race and walked away unscathed.

Unfortunately, FOX Sports did not show any footage of this crash during their broadcast of the race, but thankfully the fans in the stands were at the ready to provide footage of the chaos.

Despite the damage, Smith still managed a 13th place finish in Sunday’s race at the Daytona Road Course. The rookie, who won at Michigan, sits fourth in the NGROTS driver point standings.
